A room with a view: railway hotel in Utrecht uses IVC flooring to top off unique interior

In the midst of the busy city centre and right next to the railway station lies the Inntel Utrecht Hotel, an 11-story building with breath-taking views over the skyline. This central location at the heart of urban life inspired the hotel’s striking interior, where ‘connection’ is the recurring theme. From top to bottom, every room has been dressed to impress with versatile cityscapes and matching LVT flooring.

The hotel offers 162 rooms and suites divided into five room types, each different in luxury and size. Inntel’s house architect Feran Thomassen took charge of the design and the Dutch upholsterer Abeln rose to the challenge to install more than 5,000 meters of LVT, with the help of IVC.

Connecting the dots

The playful ‘interconnecting’ design is present throughout the hotel: a colourful metro map adorns the corridor carpet, the city floorplan was printed onto the custom-made voile curtains and hotel guests literally fall asleep gazing at the dreamy cityscape of Utrecht. To complement the look, the floors are covered with stunning wood grain detailing from the Moduleo 55 Impressive collection.

“Each room type has a different hue, distinguishing a family room from a double or single”, explains Ricardo Sjardijn, branch manager at Abeln upholstery. For the flooring, the designer opted for a colourful mix of Castle Oak and Santa Cruz, allowing for the warm, refined look of wood with vinyl’s ease of use.”

Panoramic heights

In the meeting spaces at the top floor, nature has free rein. Ricardo: “To completely match the stunning panoramic views, we used the same wood grain LVT, but mixed the colours in a playful herringbone pattern to optically divide the spacious rooms. Another benefit of the special colour blend: the floor doesn’t look dirty that easily.” To finish off, the wall-covering combines photos and drawings of the Dom and other Utrecht icons, which are abstracted into a kind of collage.

Tailor-made plinths

For the plinth covers, Abeln used LVT Moduleo tiles in the same colour. “We single-handedly cut the strips into customised plinths to avoid subtle discoloration. We produced special stands to match the corners, allowing for the plinths to slightly bend so there are no anterior angles. The result was absolutely unique, to say the least.”

A logistical challenge

The project proved to be challenging in an unexpected way. How do you construct a building of that size right in the heart of the city centre? “To minimise nuisance by day, all materials had to be supplied during the night. The stock had to be piled in a central storage facility outside the city and assembled at once for the nightly deliveries. Only one lorry would ride out.”

To organise this complex logistical affair, Abeln and IVC had to be well organised. According to Ricardo Sjardijn, good communication was key throughout the whole project to make sure that the necessary materials arrived at the construction site in time. “We were constantly in close contact and didn’t leave anything to chance.
