‘Holland Amerika Lijn’: these words are still prominently featured on the façade of the majestic Hotel New York, located on the Kop van Zuid in Rotterdam. They refer to the building’s historic use as the headquarters of a trading company. When the hotel decided to renovate 27 rooms with new floors and bathrooms, its rich history was a source of inspiration for Ethien Duy Pham, interior designer for WestCord Hotels, parent company of Hotel New York.

According to Duy Pham, not only does the appearance of the Studio Moods floor fit perfectly with the architecture of the building, its suitability for intensive use was a key factor in the selection process.

Inspired by the nautical theme

The reference to shipping and ocean trading routes is reflected in the hotel’s interior design. Duy Pham explains: “The building’s environment and history were the basis for the nautical theme we chose for the 27 rooms in the rear section. Robust elements like the Gispen steel pipe furniture reference the shipping industry and the lively Rotterdam harbor.”

A modern tribute

According to Duy Pham, the Studio Moods Herringbone Slim Laurel Oak floor is one of the stars of the bright interior. “The floor is a key element in creating a suitable atmosphere for our guests. Studio Moods offers the possibility of combining 10 creative and unique formats with a wide range of wood and stone designs.

“Both the herringbone pattern and the wood look we chose reference the original architecture of Muller, Droogleever Fortuyn and Van der Tak, who designed and constructed the building between 1901 and 1917. The specific shade we selected, on the other hand, adds a warm touch to our bright, modern-classic spaces.”

A solid foundation

But the Studio Moods floor in the New York hotel in Rotterdam doesn’t just steal the show because of its design. “Since we used the floor in hotel rooms, durability and performance were also very important”, Duy Pham continues. “Studio Moods convinced us due to the extra protection provided by the Protectonite PU coating on top of the resistant wear layer, which makes it suited to intensive commercial use. The lacquer protects the floor against dirt and makes cleaning easier.”
